True but Tragic, even after 55 years of Independence
India’s more than 80 million (eight crore) our
Tribals brothern’s life is still in dark though,
unbelievable but fact that 84% men and 95% women are
still illiterate, 90% people neither have seen the electricity
light nor concrete Road.
Friends of Tribal Society (FTS), a society registered
under the West Bengal Societies Act, was established
in 1989 as an All India Organisation. This Society for
the last 12 years is engaged in the onerous task of
spreading literacy and providing health service to the
tribal people living in the remotest area of our country
through its network Ekal Vidyalayas (One Teacher School).
We firmly believe that “a literate nation is a
prosperous nation” we made a humble beginning
in 1990 and have been able to cover more than 4200 villages
with almost 1,50,000 tribal children in the State of
Assam, West Bengal, Orissa, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya
Pradesh, Chhatisgarh and Maharashtra.
However our efforts for last 12 years
is still a drop in the ocean. There are still more than
75000 villages to be covered and we are aiming to reach
10000 villages by 2005.
FTS has evolved a cost effective non-formal
primary education system where the One-teacher school
operates in a village under a tree (without incurring
cost for school building). The teacher is recruited
from the same village or surrounding village, and he
has to have a minimum qualification of Class-Xth. He
is then given extensive training and provided with necessary
teaching aids to run the school for 3 hours a day at
a time convenient to him and the children of the village.
The annual revenue expenditure for running
a One-teacher school is Rs. 10,000/- only.
So far the Society has been raising financial
resources from benevolent people in large cities like
Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi etc.
We enclose herewith a literature briefly
highlighting our activities. We shall be pleased to
furnish you any further detail that you may desire.
We would also like to inform that Donations
to the Society for this noble cause is exempted U/s
80G of Income Tax Act.
We appeal to you to come forward and support
our efforts.
