Sri Shyamji Gupta, started Friends of Tribals under “Phulbani Zilla Unnayan Prakalp” in the year 1985. 490 schools and therapeutic units worked during 1985. For amplifying the work under this arranging, it was chosen that an organisation ought to be begun to raise assets for supporting these ventures for the tribals. With the endorsement of all, the name of this association was chosen as “Friends of Tribals Society.”

After a successful completion of legal proceedings, Friends of Tribals Society was established on January 15, 1989, with the endowments of Late Swami Laxmanand Ji Saraswati. In the underlying years, Friends of Tribals Society orchestrated help for various ventures of Odisha, which included Medical Centers, Hostel Buildings, Mobile Medical Vans, Motor Cycles, Training focuses and a Hanuman Temple at Baliguda.

Considering the circumstance in Jharkhand, the Society chose to take-up `One Teacher School’ as the fundamental venture and the advance of OTS was quick there.

As on date, Friends of Tribals Society has 32 chapters.
